Tablets Away!!

Hey, Everyone!

When Jordan created the original world of Shadowrun, he didn’t predict that people would one day interact with that world on touch-screen computers more powerful than the one that took us to the moon. It is extremely gratifying that the enthusiasm for this game setting has stood the test of time and that we are now able to deliver it on mobile devices to a new generation of gamers.

The iOS and Android tablet versions of Shadowrun Returns are NOW available in the Apple and Google Play stores for $9.99. The tablet versions don’t include the editor and will not contain access to community created content but we do plan to bundle the best community content and release it on tablets at some point in the future.

As we’ve said before, we know most paid marketing efforts are kind of useless. Most of us rely on the opinions of people we trust to help us figure out what we want to play next. So please help get the word out that the iOS and Android versions are available by sharing the links below, along with some Shadowrun love.

And here’s the new Facebook cover photo for you.

Welcome to the Sprawl, Touch-screener!

Do you mean that I can buy IOS Shadowrun in English now and I’ll get it in Spanish via a future update? I can play it in English but I feel more comfortable using my mother language…

      Thanks for your reply, Robin.

We’d love to make it that way but until we get the localization files back, we won’t be able to commit to that completely.

Ok so supposedly this out on tablets like the iPad and smart phones that uses the android is. Well if it is out for the iPad I don’t see it because it should show up in iTunes even if looking on an iPod. I would like to know how come it isn’t out for the Kindle who don’t have money for an iPad or something that doesn’t use an android is either. Why do I have to go to Google in order to play on my Kindle?

iPhone screens are just to small to be able to run a game like Shadowrun Returns. We are selectively allowing larger Android phones to run Shadowrun Returns due to a larger screen size that can support the resolutions that Shadowrun Returns needs to run in. That being said this is designed to be a tablet or PC/Mac game, playing it on anything smaller is by user choice and your play experience may suffer.

We only have enough resources to give support to Google Play and to iTunes, as we are still a small indy game studio.

Afraid you have to buy it for each platform you want to play it on. Apple/Google/Steam all want their piece of the action.

Any idea if it’ll work on a Galaxy Note 2 phone? I’ve not got the ‘incompatible with your device” banner when I look at it on Google Play, just thought I’d check though :)

    • Kieran
      September 26, 2013 at 2:21 pm #

Never mind, bought it anyway :) Seems to run great! Really glad it’s compatible, as I don’t have a PC of any kind in the house, and I’ve been wanting to play this since it was announced.

The only issue I seemed to have was that it wasn’t recognising any S pen stylus inputs whatsoever, so I had to play with my fingers. Not a problem, I just thought it’d be easier using the pen as the screens a lot smaller than on a tablet.

Thanks for a great game guys :)

@N0rdi – Steam doesn’t ‘talk’ to Apple or Android so you would need to purchase it seperately.

@Kieran – Shadowrun Returns is only for tablets. It’s too complex a game for phones.

@duagor – No, the tablet versions were not part of the Kickstarter rewards, just PC, Mac and Linux. The iTunes and Googleplay stores don’t allow us to share large numbers of codes like we were able to do with Steam.

Bought the game for my Android tablet this morning. for some reason I cannot enter my entire Kickstarter backer reward code. It won’t accept the last two characters. As a test I removed the first two characters to make room and was able to add the last two characters, as if my code were two characters too long (or the field too small.) My reward code works for the Windows desktop version. I’ve emailed HBS for support and am awaiting a response.

Frist of all, thx a lot for bringing back the shadowrun spirit, character creation was feeling like being back to paper and dices. I just started to play on ipad mini and I really like the story and dialogs, exactly what I expected. 2 things though, is there no music during gameplay, feels a bit empty while hearing only footsteps on metal ?

More of a problem, the game keeps on crashing randomly between scenes… I also have the same issue on CoD Strike team… Probably something to do with iOS 7. I tried to play, as advised without any other app running but without more success.

I hope you will find a solution for this, but, once again, great job guys!

Okay, as a gamer, and a guy, this pisses me off for a few rnsaeos.First, of course, it pisses me off because to treat a woman like this is to reduce her to nothing more than an object for gamer guys’ collective fantasies; in effect, to negate her personhood. You’re no longer a individual woman, you’re a member of the class gamer girl, and that’s all that’s important to know. There are too many gamer guys who so rarely come into contact with women that as soon as they see one that’s even vaguely interested in the things they’re interested in, their little minds go *snap*.The second piss me off point is less important overall but more frustrating to me on a day-to-day basis, and that’s that this kind of behavior means that there are fewer girl gamers, GODDAMMIT. It’s not that that frustrates me because I really want to date them, it’s that I enjoy having female players in my RPGs, I like reading female opinions on video games, I find female-authored geek works refreshing and interesting. Jackie Cassida and Nicky Rea are two of my favorite RPG authors. Terri Wendling and Ellen Datlow are two of my favorite sci-fi editors.More diversity is a good thing, and this kind of shit reduces diversity. It makes games worse. For example, for me, putting together a good RPG is about telling a compelling story. Well, if my options for players are my friends Mike, John, Al, and Sam . . . well, crap, I guess my compelling story won’t have any female main characters. Which means that it will be less compelling. Of course, I could have John play a woman, which always works so well, what with his extensive experience of the female condition and all. . .Anyway.Yeah, so that’s why I’m pissed off. MycaPS. Oh, I guess I should make clear that it’s the sexist behavior of geek guys that’s pissing me off here, not the above referenced post, which (if it wasn’t already clear) I totally agree with.

Gyp – We don’t have any plans to be available through the Amazon store at the moment but anything is possible.

duagor – It’s an Apple/Android thing – they won’t let us “give” away the game because they want their percentage if that’s where you’re getting it.

Hi HBS. I’d love to love the game but it consistently crashes when I try to hire runners from Delilah. (When switching to hire runners screen.) it hs crashed every single time at the Digital World chapter, after I run through two stages of matrix runs and buying weapons and armor, only to CTD at Delilah. I must have done this 5 or 6 times by now.
Like I said, I’d love to love the game, but right now, it’s an exercise in frustration…

I have the exact same problem… Mr Delilah seem to be a memory hog. First the fade in effects slows down to a stutter and then crash to home screen. ipad mini here. Did happen before at one point earlier in the game, but in the digital world mission it happens every time. This needs to be fixed asap.

      October 2, 2013 at 12:23 am #

I have had the same thing – I cannot get past the Digital World chapter. I have done the damn Matrix quest well over five times, and I get Crash To Desktop every time I try to hire a crew, unless it crashes before that. IOS7, iPad2 with nearly 7GB of free space.

I want to like the game, but this is extremely frustrating. Guess I’ll send and email, though honestly not sure what you guys can do without a patch or update.

    @Not Achance.

I don’t think it’s underhanded like you described. 2m is nothing really.

I do feel we could have gotten a longer game for 2m however. The content/etc added when HBS made well over the requested 400k was likely already in place and/or wasn’t more than a few simple additions really, I think.

So, if they invest in a longer campaign, I’ll happily fork out money again. Wouldn’t see this as being too difficult as they’d be pros at the editor.I don’t really get why they’re investing in the Berlin thing. I get that new artwork and equipment/spells/etc is nice, but I’ve read NOTHING from fans asking for it, which is a little odd because HBS say they’re big on taking in customer feedback.

Given DMS was only 12hrs who really cares about new stuff this early in. I guess 2m should buy more than 12hrs of initial sorry is what I’m saying. Just my option.

I just want to preface my gripe by saying that I do like the game that was created.

However, UCC has not been up to an acceptable standard. The community at large requires far more detailed tutorials from the HBS team. You’ve said time and time again that the editor is simple, but powerful. I can attest to that. To be more accurate though, I would add that it is almost inscrutable.

This inscrutability, along with the lack of UCC, is in essence dooming this game to an early grave. Everyone is looking forward to the Berlin DLC, and I had fun playing Dead Man’s Switch.

But, as a community, I feel that we require far more direct guidance about how to use the editor in particular ways. My suggestion would be for the HBS crew to open a subreddit and have keen/interested people pose specific questions about how to use the editor to accomplish certain tasks.

Also, could you consider making playlists visible on your YouTube channel? All the SRR content is getting buried with the recent Golem Arcana content.

tl;dr? You can’t leave the editor to the modding community at large without a manual, then ask them to “figure it out” & expect good UCC.

PS – I had an issue with my computer in recent months, which meant that I had to interrupt my little video series about you-know-what. I’m going to get back to working on it around the beginning of November, when I’ve returned from an overseas holiday (for the two of you who might be wondering lol).

Found the SRR editor wiki *after* I posted the above. So yeh, feeling kind of silly right now.

In combination with the Shadowrun subforum for the editor, I think that the bulk of my previous post is about a non-issue; people do have places they can go for assistance.

One thing that I will nitpick about is that, aside from the HBS tutorials, the tutorials on the wiki are all walls of text. Having a video that explains the concepts being explored would be a bonus. It would entail having a competent narrator with a voice that isn’t irritating, though.

Just bought the game on Android. At first, I was not really sure that this was a great game until I got to the first battle. All I could say is thank you for this great game.

Since I don’t currently have a tablet, I started to play the game on my Nexus 4. Everything is working fine except some little details:
    1. The modal dialogs when creating a character are almost unreadable (seems to be a font problem). For example, my first character was a mage and I really don’t know what Etiquette I selected.
    2. The game should disable the powersaving options. Leaving the game for 2-3 seconds would put the phone on sleep mode

Since I have a little screen, I would also like to know if the game has controller support so I could connect my phone to my TV and use the controller to play the game.

I am also eagerly waiting for the Linux version.

    • September 30, 2013 at 3:28 pm #

We are looking into improving text for smaller screened devices, however Shadowrun Returns is designed to be a tablet game so smaller screens might hinder user experience.

At this time we do not support game pads So you would be unable to play Shadowrun Returns on your TV. We would like to support game pads, however at this time its not on our priority list.

Horrible game experience, sorry to say that.
Too many bugs on ipad, it crashes every 10/ 20 minutes and as the saving system is not manual, you are cursed to do the same stuff once and once again. At least add auto saving with every objective…

It’s such a pity that this amazing game is almost unplayable for me. It always amazes me how mobile developers don’t get a very simple truth: gaming on a cellphone is played on very short lapses of 10-15 minutes at best, so either quicksaving or a very frequent autosaving system is a must. Just on the first part of the game it took almost one hour of play time for the game to save. Sorry but I can’t play this game like that.

  35. swingingwake
    September 29, 2013 at 6:26 pm #

@miaku — I wholeheartedly agree, especially as you’re being generous with mobile play sessions. It’s about 4 minutes average on smartphones and 8 minutes for tablets (source:…all the more reason why the existing save system coupled with the current instability of the mobile version is simply unacceptable.

The good news is that Harebrained is aware of this issue, but because re-architecting a save system is no small task, I don’t expect an update any time soon.

Like you, I’ve probably lost about 3 hours of gameplay so far to crashes so I’m regrettably done with SRR until they release a more mobile-friendly save system. It’s a testament to how much I’ve enjoyed the game so far that I was willing to keep trying after the first time I lost a significant amount of progress.

I backed this game and love the themes, style, and gameplay. However, the save game system ruined the PC experience for me. Like so many other modern-day gamers, I am not always able to sit down and play for long periods of time.

I loved the thought of being able to play on my iPad for shorter sessions and simply put down the tablet when I was done. And finally, an iOS release! I wasn’t thrilled about having to pay extra for this experience, but I get that a port costs time and money.

BUT BE WARNED, before you she’ll out for this game, that the tables save experience is JUST AS BROKEN as the PC version! Switch apps, and the entire game unloads and kicks you back to the last checkpoint!

In my mind, this is even worse than the experience that drove me to the platform in the first place.

I sure hope that HBS gets things figured out with a new save game mechanic. The PC version should have it, and the iOS version is pretty well broken without it. I’d seek a refund if I could, but since I can’t, here’s my warning to others.

    • September 30, 2013 at 3:43 pm #

We are currently looking into improving our save game functionality. However we still can’t commit to such a major architectural change or to how long it would take to complete but we are diligently working on it, so please stay tuned.

Wow this game on ios 7 is a crashfest, it’s full of random crashes. it’s so horrible a real pity because it is a great game apart from its crazy save issue. I don’t no what’s went on did no one try the ios version before release, and the game has no sound (music) bug anyways sound bug or not as it stands this game is broken on ios *Crash* there goes another hour & a half ‘down the game drain.

    • September 30, 2013 at 3:36 pm #

We are currently investigating the cause of these crashes and will push a fix as soon as we can. The sound and music bugs have been fixed and the patch has been pushed to Apple.

I’m glad to hear that you’re working on a better saving system, amazing news!

I wanted to play this game so much on my Note 2 that I have found a way to avoid the game from closing. This however will of course slow your device and drain your battery faster, since note 2 has a great battery, 2gb of ram and a great cpu, it’s worth it, but for others I doubt it.

In any case, on google play you will find two apps, zdbox and ram booster. Both have the option to create a white list of apps that won’t close. I use them both since ram booster somehow manages to get the app running no matter what, while zdbox is better to free lots of ram.

Also, if you have root on your device, there’s an app called ram manager that allows much better control of the ram for multitasking, check that if you can,

I hope this helps somewhat, it won’t fix the terrible saving system but it will allow for playing the game on the go a bit more.

I saw some reviews about crashes, sound, and save issues for the iPad version. I came here for an update on the situation and was glad to see communication about the issues. It seems like you guys are working on it. When it gets a new update I will more than gladly purchase your game! Looking forward to it.

Thanks for your patience, Jramos. We’re working on the problem. Crashing seems to be mostly on ipad2 and minis so depending on your device, it may not be an issue for you.

Please don’t allow cellphone users to buy this game. It’s pretty shitty paying for something you can’t use.

Any way to get a refund on that?

    Hi, Bruno

Completely understand your disappointment. Unfortunately, Android has over 2,000 devices and we have to “turn them off” manually. As you can imagine that’s quite a job. Can you tell me which phone you have so we can make sure to turn that one off so no one else makes the same mistake?

Googleplay has a 24 hours “return” policy but if it’s been longer than that, please email us at and we can make arrangements for that.

The game is fun. I have been playing on my Nexus 10, but I have a problem with the mechanic class NPCs. I cannot get them to summon their drones. The Off button does not toggle or react to clicks in any way. I checked the help screen and I see in the screenshot there is a light blue 1 subscript on the button indicating it takes one AP to activate, but my screen does not have that.
I have only tried with NPCs so far, dunno if it works for the PC or not. I have version 1.0.6.

I was really looking forward to buying this for my Nexus 4 when I checked my wishlist today and noticed it’s no longer compatible. Is this a temporary thing? I noticed in a previous comment you said you’re working on fixing text for smaller screens. I was really looking forward to your game; it’d be a shame to miss out on it on this device.

The seamstress union was the best thing about the game.It really gave us a sense of bellonging, shadowrun-style.I’m happy to see that you have big plans about the players’ base in Berlin campaign

Big pat on the back, you guys will go down in history for releasing the best game for tablet to date. I’m just gonna wait through the patches until the sound is fixed. Haven’t played too long but I didn’t experience any crashes.

My question is when (approx) do you plan on releasing UGC? Even if you can give me a rough quarter year date.

I got the game for both PC and Android, runs lovely on my PC but I thought I’d get it on Android so I can play it away from home.

The first room loads fine and I can explore my runner’s apartment with no issues. As soon as I go in to the Dowd flashback and move my character all the sprites start flashing and the game freezes. The issue only happens on my Acer A500 tablet, when I try the same thing with my Samsung S3 the game plays fine but I can’t read the text properly.

I have managed to fix the crash. I changed the camera mode to fixed and the projection to Orthographic and it seems to be working for now.

I’m not sure if Tegra2 chipset of the A500 has problems with the projection but it has worked for me and seems to play smoothly now. I will try it with the camera mode set to free later tonight as the fixed view is a bit of pain and hopefully it works.

just got the android version today. my battery was to low to play more than a couple hours but those two hours made my whole day. I was just had a few questions.
is there anyway to get email updates about ugc release for tablets whenever it comes out?
will it be free content or a paid doc expansion?
any plans to attempt an editor release for tablets in the future?
lastly thanks for a great trip down memory lane. it was very hard to be patient but totally worth the wait.
oh and are there any other expansions outside of Berlin and the ugc bundle in the works?

    Hi, All –

Thanks for sending your crash reports. You can continue to send them to – the more specific you can be, the more helpful it is, obviously. We continue to work on pinpointing the problems so the game will run smoother.

pox tron – We won’t be releasing the editor on tablet. They just aren’t powerful enough to run the editor. UGC content for tablets is something that we will be looking to do in the future but we don’t have a clear timeframe for when that will be so there are a lot of details that need to be worked out including whether they will be paid for free. If you sign up for the RSS feed of the HBS blog, you’ll get all our blog updates.

On my Padfone 2 the game just crashes at the char creation, after i select the gender and the race, it try to draw the char and it crashes, stops responding, my phone is a quadcore, it has 2gb of ram, so it should be more then ok right? I still havent tried on the dock. Android 4.1.1 latest by asus, no mods.

The game is not supported on phones. There are over 2000 devices on Android and we have to turn off the ones that don’t work by hand – we’re working on getting the ones that don’t work turned off. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Is there a time frame for when we can expect a fix for the routine crashing on iPad 2 and mini? Has there been any progress at all in discovering the problem, if so, what is it? Even providing a speculative answer to the first question (i.e. probably not less than two to three weeks) would be helpful. I keep checking this site to find a status update and haven’t seen anything with the exception that efforts are being directed to isolating and/or identifying the problem. I recognize this may be asking for too much, but releasing the game with such obvious flaws (it’s unplayable) and providing no discernible time frame for when it will be fixed, or even to what extent the product is damaged, is extremely frustrating. I agree with some of the other posts that any amount of competent testing would have identified these bugs. Simply put, if it was not ready, it should not have been released. Sorry for sounding harsh, but I and many who have submitted comments paid $10 for a game we can’t play.

Since you havent got any response about why the game crashes here goes speculation:

The crashes only occur on devices with 512 MB of RAM (iPad 3 and 4 have 1 GB). They most frequently occur when loading mr delilah and his runners. For me at least, they did occur when the entire union is loaded + some matrix sublevel. You can avoid lots of crashes by resetting device and closing apps.

All of this points to memory overuse. My speculation is that loading mr delilah forces the game to load all weapons/equipment and resources of all runners (ie a lot of stuff) and that is why he is crash prone. It also happens a lot when the level you have loaded is especially large.

Clearly this game was not written with tablet memory use in mind. How to solve this? There are millions of ways, but one could be partitioning larger areas of the game into two load spots. Mr delilah obviously also needs a rework; if there is not a memory leak, then at least the way resources are loaded into memory here is just not optimal.

Since this is quite the amount of work, I wouldnt expect it to happen too soon. This is all my speculation though, I’d love to see one of hbs devs answering this question.

Love this game, enjoyed it much more on tablet.

I’m asking this question in general, but would love for it to hit tablets of course, but are there any plans for a 50 or 100hr long campaign?

Again, I hope you guys continue to give your attention to tablets also.

I have an ipad mini and have done all that has been asked to do such as restart the ipad and run the game first. Since the 1.0.6 update, the game has run better but still experience crashes, in particular talking to Mr. Delilah before the Renraku run. It’s an unfortunate experience since I love the game but these crashes are making the gameplay unbearable. Were you guys counting these crashes part of the 12+ hrs of gaming for this campaign?

I’ve managed to make it to Executive Action on my iPad Mini. So about 3/4 of the game in.
This is me persisting through all the various crashes with Mr Delilah, and The Digital World.

Executive Action is where I’m stuck again. Usually after the team moves to the holding room and my Decker goes into the Matrix. It will run for another two full turns or so before it crashes. I have no idea why. Sometimes it crashes when I move from matrix to the real world. Sometimes it crashes in the middle of me carrying out my real world turns.

But basically, that’s where I’m at. No change after the latest patch either, and I’m pretty loathe to keep on trying.

(Yes, apps deleted from the ipad itself as well as task bar. iPad restarted. Turned on airplance mode. Still crashes.)

I’ m glad to see the team’s response to the crash reports, and that progress is been made.

Currently I’m playing the game in an iPad 2, and it crashes in the barrens level (3rd scene). The crashes doesn’t occur in any particular place, but rather after a certain period of time. Roughly 20 minutes into the level it will crash.

I loved the very little I could see from the game so far, and hope you fix the problem soon.

Thanks for a great game, but I can’t change the difficulty. If I set it to Very Hard it just reverts to Normal.

Can you please let me know when this will be fixed?

  72. Roker
    October 11, 2013 at 11:08 pm #

Difficulty can’t be changed on tablet, seems you can only have Normal.

No matter what you do from the load screen, in game reverts to Normal it seems, as if you return to the load screen the difficulty will always be Normal upon checking.

There were some post about this a few weeks back so I came to check. They were very polite and HBD responded, but now they’ve been deleted?

I’d hate to think that this was to avoid commenting on a bug? Please let us know.
