Spanish, French and Italian are in Beta!

We’re excited to be so close to releasing the final localized versions of Shadowrun Returns in Spanish, French and Italian but we need your help!

If you speak any of those languages, we’d love it if you’d help us Beta test the translations. This link will take you to directions on how to download the Beta version of the game and share your suggestions for better translations with us.

We want to turn this around quickly so we need your feedback by Sunday, December 8.

Thanks for your help!

I tested the french translation. Sorry to not feed your feedback form ’cause it doesn’t fit with my feedback. Too many things to change / say… So here is my feedback :

In the option menu there is a missing translation for “input type”

in the deadmanswitch description “Dans la conurbation de la metroplexe…” must be “Dans la conrurbation DU metroplexe”.

In the screen where we spend karma, there are some icon on the top of the screen, it still “BD – QU – ST – IN – WI – CH”

“animal totem” in french, it’s more “totem animal”…

    in skills capacity :
    – “Oeil de verre” I never hear about that, must be “Oeil de Lynx”
    – “recharge sauvage” must be “décharge sauvage” (and it’s still a bad translation) ’cause “recharge” mean “reloading”…
    – “recharge complète” for full auto is a very bad translation… “recharge complète” mean “total reload” (!!) must be “Tir automatique”

There is a lot of translation that don’t use the usual tabletop translation…
    – Attribute must be “Attribut” not “atout” (which don’t mean the same things at all)
    – skills must be translated by “compétence” not by “capacité”.
    – Astral plane is “plan astral” not “mana-sphere”,
    – “killing hand” is not “mains meurtrières” but “mains mortelles”
    and so so on…

Okay, I stop here, there’s too much things to say…

The whole translation seems to be done by a non french native : it’s not really false but… Frankly it’s not a good translation. Sentences are pretty correct but, there’s many little french mistake and some chosen words or the way to talks seems artificial (I mean : We can feel it’s a cheap translation in the firsts minutes – no proofreading and the man who translate don’t know exactly the feeling he provide in french).

In definitive, I waited a lot this version, but I really think that I’ll switch back to english. Anyway, people who don’t speak english can at least understand the game. However I’m afraid their feeling about the game can be negatively impacted by the translation…

As a native French speaker: actually, “Animal totem” sounds like the better translation to me.

Metroplex: the word has of yet no entry in the reference French dictionaries as far as I’m aware. In my experience, whether it is feminine or masculine is mostly a matter of regionalism.

I’d tend to go feminine myself given it mirrors “Metropole”, but the Frnech translators for Shadowrun went with the masculine, didn’t they ?

Agreed that differing from what has become the traditional French lingo for the setting is probably diminishing things a bit.

Still glad things are getting done.

Congrats on the Team for the GoG release, even if it’s going without fanfare.

En français tu parles d’un “animal totem” toi ? Pour une licence poétique peut-être ? (“la blanche colombe se pose tel un animal totem” :p

=> In French, names are positioned before adjectives (exept in some poesy). So definitly it’s “totem animal” and not “animal totem”

Metroplex is not in the dictionary but it’s used in the french translation of the tabletop and both in translation or by player speacking, it’s masculine. “Metropole” is definitly feminine and could be a translation but it didn’t provide the same feeling and I really think “Metroplexe” is more accurate. (and again, it’s used in the French version of the tabletop)

As we can see, the french translation is not a good one. Maybe a translation from the french community of SRR will be a better one. Maybe next time do not ask for a “professional” translation but ask directly the community, it’ll spare you some costs and maybe you’ll have a better translation of the SRR universe

I’ve just bought Shadowrun Returns and gave it a go in french. Although the translation doesn’t seem to be that bad (I was expecting worse with the post from Daegann), I’ve encountered a few mistakes so far, either real translations errors or just common mistakes (grammatical errors and such, or just lack of post-reading). Where can we report them? Is the Shadowrun Universe forum the official one? Do the devs plan to fix these errors or do they need to get approval from the translator and such?
