What a Great Response!

Wow, we’ve had such a great response to Shadowrun: Dragonfall over the last couple weeks!

dragonfallCallout

To us, the most rewarding part is all the emails, messages on SRR forums on Shadowrun.com, Facebook posts and tweets that have come from the community! We worked really hard to listen to your feedback and build on the success of Shadowrun Returns and we’re happy to see that the changes we’ve made are resonating with you.

That said, we admit that it’s also been gratifying to get some nice reviews from the critics, too. Here are a few of our favorite quotes and links to their reviews.

HardCore Gamer  http://www.hardcoregamer.com/2014/03/02/review-shadowrun-dragonfall/76435/

The new campaign setting is utterly compelling, the writing is some of the industry’s finest with astounding prose and character development and the added content simply equates to an experience that is only rivaled by the genre’s best.

PC Gamer  http://www.pcgamer.com/review/shadowrun-returns-dragonfall-review/

Jacking back into Shadowrun Returns for the new Dragonfall campaign, I thought I was ready for anything. In a post-magipocalypse future where trenchcoated, wizardly elves cast shield spells on hacker allies while orcs with machine guns shower them with lead, it pays to be prepared. Dragonfall managed to get the drop on me, though. I wasn’t expecting one of the most memorable and complex RPG stories of the decade.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun  http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/02/27/shadowrun-returns-dragonfall-review/

Now that’s more like it. Choice! Side-missions! A hub! A strong supporting cast who are up for a bit of a chat! Little-to-no mandatory decking sequences! A mother-lovin’ save (almost) anywhere system!

GameSpot  http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/shadowrun-dragonfall-review/1900-6415692/

There’s nary a dull moment in Dragonfall, and every mission is crafted to capture the right mix of mystery, fear, exploration, and action.

We’ve had a blast developing this expansion and would love to create more stories in the Shadowrun Universe! To do that, we need to continue to get the word out.  We’re an indie studio and don’t have the deep marketing pockets of a big publisher so we’d appreciate it if you’d share these links with friends and forums you think would like Dragonfall!

Thanks!

Well, the game is phenomenal, and I’m very much looking forward to another sequel! (Maybe one based in Tenochtitlán?) Anyway, excellent work!

Just finished Dragonfall and I have to compliment you guys on one of the best RPG stories I’ve ever played through. It reminded me of why I love the Shadowrun universe so much in the first place, and even though the ending was strong and satisfying, I’m left wanting more.

    Good job!

Why wouldn’t you give praise where it is deserved? On the other hand, that means, that one must also be able to voice a critical opinion if warranted. Since Dragonfall is a huge step up from the initial release of the main game (and its campaign), I feel the praise you’re getting is well deserved and probably hard-earned. On the other hand: DMS was lacking. I could have probably accepted the save system, if DMS had been as great as Dragonfall. But as that wasn’t the case all those nits became real issues.

In hindsight I really wished you’d taken maybe one more month until release and made DMS that much better. Note, this is not about assets or something. This is about meaningful side missions and plots, memorable characters and maybe a few more options, when it comes to selecting your team. I truly believe, DMS could have been just as good as Dragonfall is.

TL;DR: Dragonfall was really good, more of that kind, please. DMS could have used more polish.

Dear HBS, all these positive reviews make us Android users, even more impatient. So hurry up and give us Dragonfall :P

I also hope the “best of” user generated content will become availiable to us , as you’ve previously mentioned.

    Next one Hong Kong!!!

    Really, that’s what I voted for(I think). :)

And one thing that I really found missing from the game, which made my wonderful allies a bit less interesting- companion missions. I’d love to help Glory get redemption, find Blitz’s girlfriend etc. even after the main quest is over. Feels like some wasted potential.

Oh and while dead man’s switch felt more like a proof of concept, Dragonfall really nailed it.

Just finnished dragonfall and wow. I liked dead man switch but dragonfall is better in any way. It was so great. Good job.

Now i just want to see an announce saying the next campaign is planned (and set somewhere in asia : korea hongkong or neo tokyo)

Thanks for the game and without DRM! But, I bought it on Android and now I need to purchase it a second time. Same game no value! No problem to pay the difference! But a seconde time for the same game frustrates me!

Really looking forward to playing Dragonfall once it’s released on Android. Unfortunately I can’t play it on the PC (long story).

Great improvement and an enjoyable experience. It still has some flaws, mainly the difficulty/ai is to easy, but overall very, very good. One of the best newer rpgs I played in the last years!

The review on rpgcodex.net basically sums it all up fairly well in my opinion.

      March 17, 2014 at 4:56 am #

Yeah, the difficulty could have been a bit harder on the highest setting. But on the other hand, I don’t care too much about difficulty in a cRPG, if the story and characters are great.

The only thing, that plays into the difficulty remark, is, that I feel the AI needs an upgrade for the next campaign. I simply do not believe, that my enemies are all dumb enough to not seek cover – especially if their primary attack is not a close combat attack. Maybe the devs can have a look at the open-sourced code of Jagged Alliance 2 which was pretty brutal on the higher settings. Or partner with an AI middle-ware company like Moon Collider who is behind Kythera AI.

Seems to me the RPGCodex reviewer has a good point in his last paragraph. “DLC” makes me think more of horse armour than something bigger than the original game.

Hasn’t “DLC” become the catch-all phrase for what was called “expansion pack” in the olden days? And technically it is correct since you can’t buy Dragonfall in a box AFAIK. ;-)

“Hasn’t “DLC” become the catch-all phrase for what was called “expansion pack” in the olden days?”

Kind of, but I can’t currently think of any example of a DLC item being larger than the original game. Usually any add-on story content is quite short.

“And technically it is correct since you can’t buy Dragonfall in a box AFAIK. ;-)”

I’m not too sure of the wisdom of that, either, though I assume there’ll be deals for buying the two together sometime in the future.

(The wisdom of having no standalone version, I meant. I think I mistook your meaning.)

Hm, larger should be hard and usually isn’t the aim of an expansion. But there are large story DLCs like “Lair of the Shadow Broker” for Mass Effect 2. The only expansion, I could come up with on the spot, that has a similar campaign duration as the main story, would be “Heart of the Swarm” for StarCraft 2. Though you could argue, that HotS is not DLC, strictly speaking, since there was a boxed version available. But it is an expansion.

I’m not too sure of the wisdom of that, either, though I assume there’ll be deals for buying the two together sometime in the future.

I just meant, that calling Dragonfall “DLC” is technically the correct term, since there is not other distribution form besides downloading it. Nothing else was meant or implied. Sure, they could offer a boxed version in the future (I doubt that), but as of now, there isn’t one.

@HBS: could you moderate the comments in your queue, please? I know of at least one comment not shown yet. ;-)

Honestly Dragonfall was one of the better RPG stories in a long time. Your team really out did themselves. It was the first time in a very long time that a plot in a video game actually hooked me that I played for hours just to find out what was going on. The only other games that really did that was FFVII and the Mass Effect trilogy.

I’d love to play more Shadowrun from your team but if I may make a request.. How about the SNES game remade in this engine? Would be perfect a 10/10 for me because that game was great.

There’s a community effort under way, though it’s not finished yet.

Apart from that, I doubt HBS does have the rights to do the reboot. Also, I’d rather play a new story than one, that I already know.

Dragonfall is simply awesome. I loved DMS, but Dragonfall is 10x better. The character’s stories are amazing and very well treated. An ex-punk vocalist?? It fits just perfect in the anarchy of Berlin. I also love the dialog to be full of German expressions. I’ve been twice in Berlin and some scenes really remembered me some places.

Impressive work, very well done. You truly heard the fans voices, and that is much thanked. I really hope you decide to make another campaign!!

I’m looking forward to Dragonfall on iOS. I played DMS on an iPad, and it was a perfect fit – the best game I’ve played on iOS, really. Any word on even a very rough timetable for the Dragonfall iOS release? If it will be another 6 months, I think I’ll buy it for Mac, but if it’s more in the range of a few weeks or so I’ll hold out for the iOS version. Either way, thanks so much for bringing Shadowrun back in such a fun way!

I really enjoyed Dragonfall on PC. I’ve been very happy about the return of this genre and the emphasis on this style of RPG & storytelling. I can’t wait for the next DLC!

Just finished it and had a blast. I already loved dead man switch, but the writing is so much better, the characters are great and lovable. The details are really really nice.
My only regret is the end is quite fight heavy for a long time, which with turn based combat can get a bit “slow”.
But really awesome game nonetheless ! Made me want to get my rulebooks out again
