Saves, Berlin, and a Let’s Play with Jordan & Mitch

Hey Everyone!

Things are moving quickly here so we thought we’d quickly update you on what’s going on.

Beyond working on bug fixes, translations, Linux, and finishing the tablet versions of the game, the engineering team has been investigating improvements to our save game functionality. We are aware that there are a number of people who would like the ability to save in the middle of scenes. However, we also know that adding this feature would involve major changes to the core infrastructure of the game. It’s still too early to say whether this is going to be possible, but we wanted to let you know that we’re actively investigating it and will let you know more in the coming weeks.

We’ve heard a lot of questions from you wondering what to expect from Berlin. Well, our original plan called for a modest-sized campaign that we could ship by the end of October. However, after listening to your forum discussions and feedback, it became clear that you would like to see something bigger (and so would we). So, we’ve decided to spend more time on Berlin to create an experience closer to the size of Dead Man’s Switch. A story of that scope will take longer, so we’re targeting January for its release. While we’re still in the early stages of development and many things could change, we’d like to share what we’re planning so far. For example – we know that we want our next story to feel more like the player is part of a shadowrunning crew and contain more corporate intrigue.

Here are the key ideas driving Berlin pre-production right now:

  • A more flexible main story arc – choose which runs to complete first, and which factions to complete objectives for
More depth to the NPC runner characters
  • New weapons, outfits, portraits, music, and enemies – including more magical creatures
  • Improved Physical Adept gameplay – along with additions for some of the other existing archetypes
  • A European city with a very different look, “vibe”, and cast of characters
  • A story that highlights the compelling themes of the Shadowrun: Germany sourcebook

In addition, for the GMs out there, all of the environments and characters that we add in Berlin will also be available in the Shadowrun Returns Editor for anyone who has the Berlin campaign installed.

One last thing – as we’ve highlighted before, there’s some really cool stuff happening in the world of Shadowrun Returns Community Created Content. We love playing the stuff you guys come up with – so much so that we made a “Let’s Play” video of Mitch and Jordan playing “Jacked Up” by Taloswind. They had a blast, and they’ll certainly be doing more of these. Subscribe to the Harebrained Schemes YouTube channel if you don’t want to miss ‘em!

That’s it for now! If you’re at Gen Con, please stop by and see us! In addition to all the seminars we’re running, you can find us in Hall F near the front door, running playtests of Golem Arcana all weekend long.

Take care!
HBS

Thanks a lot for listening to your fans about the save feature! It is awesome to hear that you are investigating the possibilities to improve that aspect of the game :) . I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you find a solution that will be as painless to implement for you as possible. Your dedication is very much appreciated, keep up the great work! I’m looking forward to the next updates. Thanks and cheers! :)

Please add a SAVE-function to save while playing. It is really frustrating to do the whole talk and trade things all over again, when you got a head-shot after 30 minutes of playing and fighting.

Thanks for addressing the save issue even you don’t end up fixing it. Frankly, your silence was deafening. Also, glad to hear you’re expanding the scope of Berlin, even if it means delaying the release. Seems we have plenty of fan generated scenarios to keep us busy. Also, will you be publishing moire short stories with Berlin?

All these features sound fantastic, after hearing an expansion that was going to be set in Germany [ hmm what character could that involve ;) ] I almost exploded with joy. Shadowrun is awesome and you guys honor it with this game!

Someday, I’m hoping to see something as big as the Sega Genesis Shadowrun game, and I’d love for us to be able to explore most/all of Seattle, especially the Ork Underground! Now, if there was only a way to integrate content from different creators and turn the main game into one giant sandbox, with a mixture of Core content from you guys, and Expansion content from users…

    Hey HB,

Firstly, thanks for the great game! I really enjoyed Dead Man’s switch. I have one comment and one question.

I did find the save feature somewhat lacking. I like having save points being set for me to prevent loading and exploiting, but I found that at some times the intervals were too long. Perhaps more interval saves per area, instead of when only changing a floor/area. This would only be necessary during the long runs. What inconvenienced me the most was in the Seamstress’s Union. One time I finished a run, bought some gear, talked to some folks, assigned some Karma, and 15 minutes later realized I had to stop playing, but wasn’t ready to start the next mission. I had no choice but to shut down, and do the 15 minutes over again. Minor, but annoying. Maybe a save feature inside safehouses only?

And will Berlin be a free DLC?

    Thanks again, HB!

    Thanks for the update!

About the save issues, you guys should know that someone managed to make Saving during a scene possible simply by having a conversation that saves the current state of each mob etc. on the map and reload it. That way since the map loads, the game is saved as normal and I’m not entirely sure how everything else works, but it seems like you can even save during combat if you script all that stuff.

Complicated for community builders with little experience in programming, but it can be done so I’m sure you professionals can find a solution as well.

As a side-note, as convincing as Jake is I don’t think I’d sleep in a morgue. Ever.

    Oh and I forgot…

If you find time, please fix Cybergear.
As it is, the 0.5′s are rounded forever so if you start with a jack at 0.5 you’re down to 5 and if you get something else at 0.5 later, you’re down to 4… when it should be 5.

I was also never able to replace existing cybergear with higher quality. Like Basic arms with Alpha arms. Not sure if it’s a bug or intended… but if the doc can replace a living arm with a cyber one, replacing a cyber arm with another cyber arm should be a cakewalk and not cost additional essence either?

Anyways, I’ve seen this discussed a lot too, on some forums.

    Thanks!

Shadow run unlimited is nailing it as a concept(at least for me), open world to explore makes me wish the game Devs would get in touch with southwind1 to support his efforts and speed up the creation.
As of now open world is way more interesting than a new story arc. : /
Thank you for creating this game and the editor for us to mess with….truly an honorable thing to do in today money grabbing gaming word.

Very nice update. Great to see you enjoy Taloswinds run and the changes listed are exactly what the fans are wanting. I can only see SR:R becoming even more of a success ;)

I’m really looking forward to buying this–as soon as the save game feature gets fixed or even slightly improved on what I’ve read is the current state of things. Good luck with your efforts, they will be and are much appreciated!

    All right, more music! :D

Would LOVE to fight infected metahumans. >:3 And more critters. Nagas! Barghests!

I wonder if there’ll be German metahuman variants…

And I’m glad you’re able to spend so much more time on the Berlin expansion. :) October is quite soon.

Any word on when it is going to be released for tablets? It was supposed to be delayed by a few weeks, and this was 3 weeks back. Thanks

I’m curious as to what feedback has guided the physical adept gameplay improvement. Will this apply to physical adepts in general or is it specific to the campaign set in Berlin? Does anybody have any details?

I want to say great game and I’m looking forward to the Berlin DLC. I also have a small question if you would be kind enough to get back to me, I was wondering when I would receive my USB dogtag because I ordered the collectors edition and I haven’t seen any information on it.

The save feature auto saving is a bit of a letdown, but I understand why it was done the way it was. Also I don’t see why people are complaining the intervals are too long when it auto saves every time you just change to a new area in general. It works fine for what it is but a save where you can feature would be nice.

For those asking about the Tablets, we are still working on the tablet versions. We haven’t officially committed to a date because getting through the iTunes certification process can be very unpredictable. We’ll be sure to let everyone know once we have a date that we feel is solid.

Any ETA on Linux port? Before or after the Berlin campaign? You had my support on Kickstarter as soon as native port was announced, and been itching to get to play this, from what I’ve heard the game is awesome :)

Yay! SRR iOS build to be submitted to Apple this week. http://pockettactics.com/2013/09/03/shadowrun-returns-ios-android-release-imminent/

To unsatisfied and ‘is this a joke’ – you guys need to chill a little. The game has its flaws but with an overall metacritic rating of 76, I’d say it isn’t too bad. The main flaws are the save-game issue and the linear campaign, both of which should be addressed shortly (save game shud be less of an issue on tablets) and Berlin/UGC will provide non-linear campaigns. I’m neither a HBS ‘fanboy’ nor their kickstarter backer (I found out about the game much after the funding period) but I admire the work they’ve put into it. I wonder if you can name a better kickstarter game of this magnitude.
