SHADOWRUN RETURNS!

Hi everybody,

Jordan here with our last update before Shadowrun Returns gets into your hands. (Wow, I can’t believe I just typed that!)

I want to take a moment to personally thank you again for all your support over the last year or so. It’s been so great hearing from you on the forums, meeting you in person at cons, and eating the bagels and pizza you sent us. It’s definitely an experience I’ll never forget!

I also want to publicly thank the team at Harebrained Schemes for all their incredibly hard work over the past year. What a great group of people! They’re passionate about making games, about working in a highly-collaborative, high-energy environment, and about makingShadowrun Returns. They’ve really risen to the challenge and it’s been a pleasure going on this adventure with them.

On behalf of the team, I sincerely hope you enjoy Shadowrun Returns. It’s been a labor of love and represents one of the greatest collaborations of my career. Thanks again for the opportunity.

So what’s next? Well, work on the Berlin campaign has already begun. And Linux, of course! And localization!

But that’s not all…

Below, you’ll see the first piece of concept art and a little video that tells you about our next Harebrained Scheme, Golem Arcana, which will launch on Kickstarter in August.

While it was tempting to start another tactical RPG project similar to Shadowrun Returns, we really believe in the potential that Kickstarter holds for launching new game worlds and experiences. I had this idea brewing in the back of my head for awhile and we decided that now was the right time to launch a new Harebrained Scheme.

So, the core Shadowrun team will continue to focus on Shadowrun Returns, while a small part of the studio branches off in this bold new direction. I’m really excited about our new game world and I hope you will be, too. Take a look below.

Have fun tomorrow, chummers!

Any news on whether the mobile versions will release tomorrow? Very excited…

I too am wondering this, I thought it would release at the same time as the desktop versions but now am hearing that it is delayed for a few weeks. Though I am willing to wait it would be nice to sink back in to Seattle sooner, it has been much too long chummers.

Also, will the ‘mobile’ version be available for WP and Surface, or is this going to be targeted towards iPad/Android?

I think I already read that it’s Android and iOS tablets only, though release details are a secret to everyone I think. If you have a Windows tablet with full-fledged Windows (not Windows RT), installing the Windows version of the game should work .

Hey there! I am very excited about Shadowrun returns! As i guess everyone is. I kinda want to ask you a question about helping you on the berlin campaign: as it happens i live in berlin and would be able to photograph locations. If you’re interested just write a mail ;-)

    Sincerely a backer :)

Quick last minute question for the devs (or anyone else who knows). You mention you’re getting straight to work on localization in this post, but what languages are you looking at? Sorry if this has already been mentioned somewhere and I missed it. I’ve got a few chummers who would be thrilled to hear it if a Japanese release is in the works.

    “Gollum Arcana” !

    – Sounds interesting. Tabletop 2.5

Only a view hours, until the release of “Shadowrun Returns”!

But a little bit unsure, which character class to choose for my first run in the World of HBS’ “Shadowrun Returns”.

I’m in the same boat as you. I usually play the decker in tabletop games, but I’ve been uncertain since hearing Matrix runs are going to be a very infrequent thing.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand why they had to do it that way. I’m just concerned a decker as your main PC might not be practical as a result. ._.

Hi there. It might be an obvious question, and maybe you answered it some time ago in some interview: is there an iphone version in the works ?
and what if i buy it for ipad, and then force it to iphone via a little .plist tweaking ? might work since a bunch of games did that

  25. Wizfall
    July 25, 2013 at 4:02 am #

Too bad that Gollum Arcana is not my thing (i dislike the concept).
I was expecting something else ( a scifi or space opera or steampunk cRPG)
So it’s a deception for me.
However i wish you good luck with the kickstater.
I hope that if the kickstarter is not a successful as you though, you don’t think it’s the fault of creating a new IP rather the concept.

Steam says, the game will be released in about 3.5 hours – that would be 7PM in Germany.
I’m a bit disappointed about this.
For us, the 25th is nearly over and Still no SRR.
In addition, it’s summer holiday season here.
So more potential for fuming gamers.

Steam has a timer letting you know when you can expect to download Shadowrun Returns. Go there and torture yourself by staring at the timer as the seconds go by.

At 8:30 AM CST it says “This game will unlock in approximately 4 hours”. So go find something to do while you have the chance, before this game completely takes over your life once it’s released.

OK, so I’m trying to be patient, but it’s about 3:30 in the afternoon, and I’ve still not heard any word. Then I read someone else posting “Just starting up the game”, and to be honest that kind of annoys me.

I know that the DRM-free version has ended up being kind of a red-headed stepchild (no offense to gingers, really — it’s an old idiom that I thought might be slightly nicer than using the b-word), with DLC limitations and no future for community content. But could you at least let me have my game at roughly the same time as everybody else?

    @HarebrainedSchemes

Awesome game so far, the asthetic is spot on, the story is tight and tense, and the characters are interesting. Gameplay is a bit simplistic in the beginning and the lack of a true save function is very puzzling. Please plan to address these issues, but overall GREAT JOB ON THE RELEASE! and I look forward to more Shadowrun Returns in the future.

Just wanted to stop by and say thanks for making the best Shadowrun game to date. And considering how cool the SNES game was, that’s no small praise. I wasn’t overly troubled by slight quibbles like the save system, and overall the game managed to meet or exceed my expectations at every turn. As for complaints like the lack of a loot system, I have to say that that’s not what Shadowrun is about, and you made the right choices as far as development priorities. Thanks for leaving us a class-less option in character creation, so we can make our characters from scratch like true Shadowrunners. I’ll have to add Shadowrun Returns to my list of beloved classic tactical RPGs, right next to Fallout and Jagged Alliance. Future community content can only add value to this already-great game.

When I heard about Shadowrun , it’s was a dream come true . I’d never even HEARD of kick starter but you can bet your ass if I see any games of interest they’re getting my backing !

I am eagerly anticipating the release of this on IOS and would love to know a release date.

I’m excited for the release, but I have one problem: my rewards code won’t work. On top of that problem, the interface does not allow me to copy-paste, so I have to input it manually (super tedious) AND the interface does not scroll so I cannot see whether I am typing it correctly. I’ve tried 5 times now and no luck. Help would be greatly appreciated.

its a nice story with a little tactical combat game attached. thats ok, the story is entertaining. but the interface, the controls and the save system are horrible. it feels like harebrained never even tried to make a game for pc, its all very much designed for tablets. the game needs at least a proper save system and customizable keyboard and mouse shortcuts for everything. i beg you to forget about the dlc until these problems are fixed. and i assure you, you wont get any more money for anything from me until they are..

  62. Jordan S. Thomas
    July 26, 2013 at 8:18 pm #

Here’s what I’d do to improve on the game:

    1) Allow for manual saving.
    2) Make crits not as able to decide battles singlehandedly.
    3) Allow for more noncombat options if possible.

It’s interesting for sure, but in my opinion this would make it amazing.

I agree with the saving thing as well, but beyond that, are you guys going to optimize the engine? Seriously, why does it take so long to load the assets, and then optimizing the assets? It’s a great looking game, but surely there’s a better way to do this than the way you currently are.

    July 28, 2013 at 10:53 am #

I’m longtime shadowrun fan, both tabletop and videogame; in fact it was the genesis game that got me into tabletop rpg’s in the first place. While I enjoyed many aspects of SRR, overall I found it disappointing due to the very short length of the campaign (I am boggled by those who claim to have gotten 15+ hours out of the game since I completed the game in far less time while pursuing every sidequest available), the relative simplicity of the equipment/cyberware system, and the lack of any kind of open world. In the genesis version, one of the most innovative features was the random runs that could be generated by any Mr. Johnson, which gave you a reason to explore the world and see all the different aspects of the awakened world, and it was sorely missing in SRR. I still go back and play the genesis version every couple years, and I feel that one has more replayability and depth than SRR. While i look forward to the Berlin Campaign and UGC, that doesn’t excuse a lackluster and all too short main campaign for the game. Good UGC is going to take a long time to come about, as everyone saw with games like Nwn, and at least when NWN came out it had a beefy, engrossing campaign that showcased the engine and had a lot of freedom and replayability. I hope that in light of these critiques, which I know I am not alone in making, that we see updates to the game that better reflect the legacy of shadowrun and the expectations you created when you said you were going to update those games with SRR, which currently reminds me more of the 4th “update” to D&D than the Pathfinder update to the D&D legacy.

Just beat the dead mans switch. Great job thank you so much. The story is great, characters are well written as well. The game play was smooth and easy to figure out. Overall the game felt nostalgic and fresh all at the same time. Cant wait to see what other if any campaigns/dlc you have planned I will be happy to purchase and ecstatic to play them. On a side note the music was very atmospheric and helped pull me in so well. When I could hear some of the Snes game ost Mixed in the stuff it gave me goosebumps.

Hi, I have noticed other comments of people asking about the mobile version. that’s what I read the entire thread here to find out about and I find it odd that with all of the people asking about it there hasnt been any sort of answer or explanation offered as to when we can expect a tablet version to come out, our even if there is still a tablet version coming out. quit being douchebaggy and let us know something.

game was pretty entertaining and felt very polished but ui should have faster response. it feels that every action you take has a delay. Other than that campaign is really short and we didnt go in depth for even a single character.(which is big deal for an rpg). Graphic style and atmosphere was great this game had the potential to be all time classic if it had more content in it plain and simple

I’m a long-time (since 1994) shadowrun fan. I even live in Seattle :-) I had high hopes for this game and am left with kind of a “meh” feeling about it. It definitely is not to the calibre of the Fallout series, but playing SRR was better than mowing the lawn. Hope SR online is better when it comes out.

Guys, I have been waiting for years for another chance to run in the shadows. I loved my SNES version and bought a genesis just to have the Sega version as well, since what I loved the most was the ability to take on random runs. The game in a visual sense is satisfying, the music was amazing, the playability was fun, even if the matrix was just the same as being in the meat world basically, but what I still long for is the ability to free roam Seattle and the wilderness. Will that be happening? Please tell me in the update you’ll actually release the city. I just want to roam around, find random encounters, take on the runs I want, not have to follow a linear story if I chose not to… anyway, thanks for bring back something I wanted for so long, but I really was hoping I’d be able to explore and take on missions I wanted to.

    Hey Guys!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! It is not DeusEx, but it is Shadowrun. And it is really nice work for only one year of developement.

This editor will surely keep the core of SRR players busy for a looooooong time :)

I hope you keep up the good work and bring some additional content (Berlin and more…).

I hope the merch doesn’t cost a fortune to get in Canada. I’ve wanted a Shadowrun shirt for more than fifteen years!
